As our Coffee Trainer you will be introducing trainees to specialty coffee via our multi-week Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) accredited barista training programmes. You will be the expert on all things related to making the perfect brew: that means techniques, styles, origins, taste profiles and everything in between. The key aspect of your role will be imparting your knowledge to a diverse range of trainees, ensuring that they are supported yet pushed to meet their potential in the specialty coffee industry. In addition, you will be working closely with the other members of the delivery team in teaching and developing soft skills - personal skills that are key to being a successful employee - a critical component that sets the Well Grounded training academy apart from others. We’re a small team who make a big impact, so you’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced, agile environment. You will take ownership of each trainee’s technical skills development and work closely with the Progressions Manager and Partnerships Manager to ensure everyone’s progression and employability development areas. You will also be instrumental in providing feedback to the Head of Delivery in order to refine and further develop our training programmes, both existing and new. Key tasks and responsibilities: To lead on the delivery of our entry level barista courses, in-person and - if needed - online. To contribute to the delivery of our Graduate network activities and further level skills and employability training To support the Progressions Coordinator in delivering soft skills training, online or in-person To support with administrative tasks related to each course, including but not limited to preparing training materials and inputting and maintaining monitoring and evaluation notes and keeping accurate records of trainee development ensuring funder requirements and the Aptem learning system are kept up to date at all times To maintain the training space, including stock control, purchasing and managing coffee supplies, liaising with vendors, and keeping equipment in good working order To work with the Education & Quality Manager and Head of Delivery on refining training programmes and related materials To attend weekly meetings to ensure all staff are kept up to date with relevant information on activities and the wider coffee environment To support with co-developing content and delivering sessions for the graduate programme, as needed by the programme team To mentor participants on our Progression programmes for those already working in the industry To be an Ambassador for Well Grounded, speaking at events, careers fairs, assessment days, with schools and local groups, and within the coffee industry To capture content for social media during training and events This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your love for coffee to a teaching position in which you will be directly responsible for improving the employability and long term employment prospects of countless individuals, as well as taking your career to the next level. As part of this role, we will support you on your journey to become a fully accredited trainer (AST), if you’re not already certified.
Essential skills: Hands-on experience working as a Barista or head barista (2 yrs minimum) Delivering coffee or other content face to face, preferably to a range of people with different needs Excellent communication skills and an ability to communicate with a range of people from different backgrounds Ability to maintain energy for periods of time when working with groups of people Able to work to tight deadlines (study or work) Completing administrative tasks, including the use of Excel and Word or alternatives An ability to work collaboratively, taking and incorporating feedback A commitment to social impact and a belief in supporting everyone to reach their full potential
Preferred Skills: Experience working, studying or volunteering with vulnerable/disadvantaged young people or adults Experience of working in hospitality and/or specialty food or beverage Good knowledge of the London specialty coffee industry, including major independent roasters and key industry leaders Interest in and understanding of Sensory Skills. Background in education or teaching (formal education or hands-on experience) A passionate interest and knowledge of coffee
Hours This is a full time permanent role. Your place of work will be flexible based on where training is taking place, but will mainly be across our two Academies in Tower Hamlets and Camden.
